Vol. 134 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laoighis and Offaly Lands.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring for division amongst local uneconomic holders the Carter estate at Timogue, Stradbally, County Laoighis; and, if so, with what result.

The Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of 201 acres on this estate. An objection to acquisition has been heard by the commissioners and judgment has been reserved.

Could the Minister say when judgment will be given in this case, because we were informed that judgment was reserved some months ago?

I am hopeful that it will be given very shortly.

Is the Minister aware that 16 conacre tenants lost their means of livelihood over a year ago as a result of some action which I cannot understand? Will he urge the commissioners to speed up acquisition and division of the untenanted portion of this land?

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring for division among local uneconomic holders the lands of Mr. Edgill, formerly owned by Miss O'Brien, at Cherrygarden, Daingean, County Offaly; and, if so, with what result; and if the Land Commission have at present no proceedings for the acquisition of these lands, whether he will ensure that the question of initiating such proceedings will receive immediate attention.

As I informed the Deputy on 30th January last in reply to a question about this estate, the Land Commission have decided to take no action for the present for the acquisition of the lands.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring for division amongst the local uneconomic holders, the land of Mr. Robert Hipwell in the Camross area, County Laoighis.

Proceedings for the acquisition of the lands in question are well advanced.
