Vol. 134 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dungarvan Postal Service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that mails including parcel post, weighing up to eight cwt. have to be conveyed from Dungarvan station and delivered throughout the area by means of an ordinary handcart pushed by a postman and that the Dungarvan area including the Abbeyside district has to be served twice daily, thus giving grounds for the employment of an additional postman and, if so, if he will state when he proposes to have the position remedied.

Mails for Dungarvan are not conveyed from the railway station. The morning mails arrive from Waterford by mail car which brings them to the post office, and the afternoon mails arrive by bus which drops the mails at a point about 50 yards from the office, from which point they are conveyed by a postman who uses a handcart. The present parcel delivery force is adequate and the employment of an additional postman is not warranted.
