Vol. 136 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Locomotive Employees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware (1) that it is proposed by the C.I.E. locomotive department to reduce and transfer several locomotive men in Tralee, Cork and Mallow locomotive departments; (2) that this will mean the breaking up of their homes; (3) that those men have but recently been sent home after being away on transfer for several years, and (4) that such type of action led to labour trouble within the industry in May, 1950; and, if so, if he will make representations to C.I.E. to take the necessary steps to prevent such grave injustice.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that C.I.E. are about to reduce and transfer several locomotive employees in Tralee, Cork and Mallow locomotive depots, thereby causing undue hardship to those men who are only home after being on transfer for several years; and, if so, if he will make representations to C.I.E. to prevent this taking place.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 19 together.

In accordance with the provisions of Section 55 of the Railways Act, 1924, which apply to C.I.E. by virtue of Section 46 of the Transport Act, 1950, the conditions of employment of transport employees of C.I.E. are regulated in accordance with agreements made between the board and the trade unions concerned. I have, accordingly, no function in the matter.
