Vol. 136 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicles Road Tax.

asked the Minister forLocal Government if he is aware of the unfair method of calculating the amount of quarterly road tax on motor vehicles; and, if so, if he will amend the scheme so that the quarterly road tax will not exceed 25 per cent. of the annual rate.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will avail of the powers vested in him to reduce the quarterly rate of road tax for motor vehicles in respect of persons who are unable to pay the yearly tax in one moiety.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether he has received an application from the executive committee of the private motorists' protection committee requesting that an order be made before the 24th March fixing the quarterly tax on private motor vehicles at not more than 25 per cent. of the annual rate and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 56, 57 and 58 together.

I do not propose to alter the present method of calculating the quarterly tax, which has not changed for almost 50 years.
