Vol. 138 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Promotion.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Justice if he will recommend to the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána the introduction of the system of special promotion to the rank of sergeant for long service in the forthcoming promotion examination for those Gardaí whose officers recommend them for their ability, efficiency, zeal and good conduct while in the force.

The Garda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations, 1929, already provide that a proportion of vacancies in the rank of sergeant, not exceeding 25 per cent., may be filled by the promotion of Guards who have shown special zeal and ability in the performance of their duties, notwithstanding that they may not have passed the promotion examinations.
