Vol. 153 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rosslare Coast Erosion.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that seven to ten feet of land at Rosslare disappeared completely in a recent storm, and, if so, if he will arrange for an immediate engineering inspection with a view to ascertaining what remedial measures can be taken and whether it would be possible to have cement groynes erected.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the urgent need for action to prevent serious damage to property in Rosslare village, and, if so, whether funds will be provided in the current financial year to enable protective works to be erected at Rosslare Strand.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 47 and 48 together.

I have seen newspaper reports of storm damage at Rosslare early last month. As the Deputies are aware, the general question of coast erosion is receiving consideration. Pending a decision, it is not possible for me to say what action, if any, will be taken in regard to Rosslare.

Could the Minister say when a decision may be taken in respect of this particular erosion?

I hope to have a decision taken at a very early date.

But you told us that a few months ago.

No, what I said a few months ago was that it was receiving more urgent consideration than it had received for 19 years previously.
