Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Road.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the Land Commission road through the Rostellan estate, Whitegate, Aghada, County Cork, is at present practically impassable, and that as a result lorries collecting milk supplies for local creameries have refused to call on farmers on the estate and the farmers concerned are compelled to cart their milk, beet, grain, etc., to the main road for transport; whether the Cork County Council made representations to his Department to have the road put into proper repair for the purpose of having it taken over for maintenance by the council, and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

The county council were asked in 1950 to take over the road in question and agreed to do so provided it was first brought up to their required standard—the cost of the necessary improvement works to be borne by the Land Commission. As this road had been completed and left in good condition in 1947, the Land Commission have no liability for its further maintenance and would not agree to meet the total cost. However, in order to assist the allottees who were using the road, the Land Commission offered a contribution, ex gratia, towards the cost of bringing the road up to the county council requirements. This offer was not accepted by the county council and the Land Commission decided to take no further action.
