Vol. 161 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Economy in Defence Forces.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will indicate the nature of the economy providing £100,000 from the Estimate for the Defence Forces to which the Minister for Finance referred in his Budget statement.

By a critical and sustained review of all aspects of expenditure on the Defence Forces and by the elimination of all but the most essential forms of outlay, it is hoped to effect a saving of £100,000 during the year.

Will that be in addition to the quota that the Minister for Defence will be expected to make to the £3,000,000 over-estimation? Is the Minister not able to answer?

There is no quota.

Then, do I understand that the Minister for Finance made his estimate of £3,000,000 overestimation without any contribution being anticipated from the Votes for Defence?

No. There are a number of suggested economies under examination at the moment but no definite decision as to which——

Specified economies?

Yes, specified economies.

We shall ask again.

Is it the intention of the Minister to apply this in Renmore Barracks, Galway?

That is a separate question.
