Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-Tax Outstanding.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state to the nearest £5,000 in each case, the amount of income-tax under each schedule outstanding at the 31st December, 1957, or some recent date, the approximate amount of tax which is under appeal, and the approximate amount which is regarded as irrecoverable.

The latest date for which particulars are available is the 1st June, 1957. At that date, for years up to and including 1955-56, the amount of income-tax outstanding under each schedule was as follows:—

£

Schedule A

650,000

Schedule B

80,000

Schedule D

7,100,000

Schedule E

2,945,000

Total

£10,775,000

The allocation of the figures between Schedules A and B and Schedules D and E is to some extent estimated.

Information is not available as to the precise amount of the tax which was under appeal at that date but it is estimated at about two-thirds of the total.

The collectible content of the total of £10,775,000, after disposal of all appeals, etc., is estimated at £2,900,000.

Would the Minister mind repeating the last piece?

The collectible content of the total of £10,775,000 after disposal of all appeals, etc., is estimated at £2,900,000.

Does that mean irrecoverable or found not to be due?

There is a very big amount of that under appeal.
