Vol. 171 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Moneygashel (Cavan) Sub-post Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the inconvenience and hardship caused to the people of Moneygashel, County Cavan, by reason of the closing of the sub-post office there; and if he will consider reopening this sub-post office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in regard to the sub-post office at Moneygashel, County Cavan, which has recently been closed (a) the total value of stocks it was allowed to carry in 1951, 1954 and on the 30th September, 1958, (b) the average weekly value of sales of stamps and postal orders for the year ended 30th September, 1958, and (c) the average number of old age and widows' pensions paid out weekly for the year ended 30th September, 1958.

With your permission, a Cheann-Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 36 together.

The justification for maintaining a sub-post office at Moneygashel has been reinvestigated and, as a result, it has been decided to reopen an office there provided, of course, that a suitable candidate is forthcoming.

The particulars of business sought by the Deputy are as follows: (a) Stocks held were £20 15s. 0d. in April, 1952 (this is the earliest date for which records are now available); £114 in 1954, and £110 on 30th September, 1958. (b) For the year ended 30th September, 1958, stamp sales averaged £1 10s. 7d. weekly and postal order sales averaged £10 10s. 5d. weekly, (c) For the year ended 30th September, 1958, the average numbers of pensions paid weekly were 26 old age and 13 widows' and orphans'.
