asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of the whole country the number of cases of poliomyelitis and the number of deaths from this disease which occurred during each quarter of 1957 and 1958.

The number of cases of poliomyelitis during each of the quarters of 1957 was 52, 22, 35 and 39 respectively. The corresponding figures for 1958 were 31, 56, 104 and 68. The total for 1957 was 148 cases as compared with 259 cases in 1958.

Deaths from this disease for each of the quarters of 1957 were 6, 3, 3 and I as compared with figures of 4, 1, 3 and 1 for the corresponding quarters of 1958. The total number of deaths for 1957 was 13 as compared with 9 during last year.

I should say that the figures I have given in respect of 1958 are provisional.

Notifications of cases of poliomyelitis in Dublin County Borough during 1957 and 1958 were as follows:—
