Vol. 172 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Roof of Dungarvan Castle.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to restore the roof of King John's Castle at the Garda barracks, Dungarvan, which was stripped recently by the Office of Public Works.

The extant portions of the structure known as King John's Castle, Dungarvan, consist of the remains of a large keep, three towers and sections of curtain walls. Some years ago, the relatively modern slated roof of the main tower was damaged by storm and in the interests of safety, the remaining slates were removed. The question of the restoration of this roof is being examined, but no decision has yet been reached.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to make clear that the local authority and the urban council are very anxious that this work should be done as soon as possible?

The matter is receiving attention.
