Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Cleaners and Drivers.

45.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will ascertain from Córas Iompair Éireann whether a considerable number of cleaners in the 20 to 30 age group are to be pensioned off unless they take alternative employment at a lower rate of pay; and, if so, how many men are involved; and whether there are provisions in transport legislation to enable the Company to pension off at generous pension rates drivers in the 60 to 65 age group, the application of which would help to create vacancies as drivers for younger men who are now cleaners and for whom there is no employment as drivers as a result of the dieselisation policy of the Company.

The Transport Acts provide for compensation, at the expense of the State, for employees of C.I.E. who are discharged on grounds of redundancy, or who suffer a worsening of their conditions of ememployment on transfer on redundancy to other positions in C.I.E. I am advised that the matter referred to in the Deputy's question has been settled following negotiations between C.I.E. and the Trade Unions concerned.
