Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schull (Cork) Freezing Plant.

94.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the freezing plant provided at Schull at big expense to public funds has been practically closed down for the greater part of the time since its erection; and, if so, whether it is possible to utilise it permanently for some type of feasible project.

I am aware that An Bord Iascaigh Mhara have been unable to secure supplies of fish to maintain the freezing plant at Schull in operation. I am sure the Board would be glad to receive any helpful suggestions for the utilisation of the plant.

Has the Board in mind any suitable project that could be operated at this plant, which has been practically closed since its erection?

The best way of utilising such a plant is for the fishermen to increase their catching power. That is what the plant is put there for.

Put it where the fish are being taken.

Would the Minister consider the feasibility of setting up a cannery?

That is a question for the Board.

Would the Minister consider that proposal?
