Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Unions and Closed Shop Employment.

29.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he intends to take steps to permit the trade unions to insist on the practice of a closed shop in industrial and other concerns where trade union labour is employed.

As announced by the Taoiseach, an informal working group including representatives of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, has been set up to examine the difficulties said to be experienced by trade unions arising out of the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of the Educational Company v. Fitzpatrick and others. The right of trade unions to take action, including picketing, to enforce union membership is the main question to be considerd by the group. Until such time as the findings of the group are available and have been considered, I cannot say what steps, if any, will be taken in the matter.
