The average cost per acre of planting State Forests, excluding the cost of land acquisition and administration, is currently estimated at £32 16s. Od. As regards maintenance charges, it would be extremely difficult to produce any sort of accurate average figure for the total area of State plantations because of the irregular timing of cost incidence over the various heads of maintenance, the extremely variable pattern of age classification in our plantations and the varying periods of crop rotation which may be applied.
