Vol. 196 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Installation Application.

49.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the date on which application was made by a person (name supplied) for the installation of a telephone; and when installation will take place.

The application was made in February, 1961. It is hoped to provide service before the end of this year.

In view of the importance of the work being done by this person in a rural community, may I ask the Minister to do his utmost to speed up the installation of the telephone?

I have told the Deputy that it is hoped to provide the service before the end of the year. The Deputy is aware, I am sure, that the conversion of the Roscommon area to automatic working is now in progress. The engineers and the gangs are fully employed on that work at the moment and it is expected it will be finished by the end of the year. When it is finished, all the outstanding applications in that area will be attended to together.

What about the 10,000 others?

They will be treated in the same way. All the cabling work will be done then.

Is the Minister talking about the calendar year or the financial year?

At the end of the present year.

By Christmas?

Yes, that is what I mean.

There are 10,000 waiting.

There are always waiting lists.
