Vol. 196 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary Education.

50.

asked the Minister for Education what percentage of children attending national schools subsequently obtain education in secondary schools.

The age groups in national schools extend from 4 to 18 years. The age groups in secondary schools normally extend from 12 to 18 years. Furthermore a substantial number of the pupils in secondary schools did not previously attend national schools. Therefore it is not possible to state by reference to the total numbers in national schools and in secondary schools what percentage of the pupils in the former enter the latter.

Relating the matter to the 14 to 15 age group the position is that as previously stated, about 2 out of 3 of the children in that age group are attending full-time courses of education.
