Vol. 196 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity in Rural Schools.

54.

asked the Minister for Education how many national schools in rural Ireland have electric light; and what percentage of the total of national schools in rural Ireland do these represent.

My Department has no record of the number of national schools which have electric light and I regret that I cannot give the information which the Deputy seeks.

When applied for by managers grants may be allowed by my Department towards the cost of installing electric light in national schools.

Is it not rather astonishing that the Minister does not know how many schools have electric light and that he does not appear to be interested in ensuring that they all have?

The lighting and planning of the school is a matter for private architects or those of the Office of Public Works. The use of electricity at night is not a common occurrence. It may be electricity will be needed in the school and I shall see to it that it is installed, if and when required.

A soft answer turns away wrath.
