Vol. 196 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Apprentices: Continuation of Training.

27.

asked the Minister for Defence what arrangements are made to continue the training in their various trades of members of the Defence Forces who have completed their period of training at the Army Apprentice School, Naas, and who have been posted to other sections of the Defence Forces.

Each member of Na Buan Óglaigh who is trained at Scoil Phrintisigh an Airm and attains the required standard is, on completion of his training at an Scoil, posted to a Corps or Service where he receives two years' further practical and theoretical training under supervision.

Apart from these latter two years of training, would the Minister say what opportunity these apprentices have of pursuing their trade in the Army?

I do not think I could answer that question in detail. They are assigned to various corps in which the training they were undergoing in the school will be continued. That is about the only answer I can give.

My information is to the contrary, that they are posted to any place and are not given an opportunity to pursue the trade to which they have apprenticed themselves.

Will the Deputy give me some particulars of the cases he has in mind and I shall have them examined?
