Vol. 196 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Board of Works Replies to Representations by Dáil Members.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in relation to the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary what reconsideration he has given to the sending of letters in reply to representations by Members of the Dáil; and if in view of the fact that he has now permitted the Chairman of the Office of Public Works to reply to Members he will extend the same permission to the Director of Special Employment Schemes Office so that he may reply to Members who address enquiries to him as heretofore.

On 17th July last, I wrote to Deputy Dillon as follows:

"P.S. 17 Iúil, 1962 James M. Dillon, Esq., T.D., Dáil Éireann, Baile Átha Cliath.

Dear Deputy,

I would refer to your remarks on the Estimate for the Office of Public Works concerning the desirability of having letters from Deputies answered by the Permanent Head of the Department, rather than the Political Head, should members so desire.

I undertook to re-examine the position. I have decided, therefore, that should a Deputy address his letter to the Chairman of the Board of Works, I am agreeable, having seen the letter in question, that the Chairman will reply and sign such letter on my behalf.

I sincerely trust this meets the point made by you.

Yours sincerely (Sd.) Donogh O'Malley."

I do not propose to make any further change.
