Vol. 199 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Tipperary Estate.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have as yet completed their acquisition of the Charteris Estate, Cahir, County Tipperary.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that, owing to the action of the Land Commission in acquiring the Charteris Estate, Cahir, County Tipperary, twenty-five men, many of whom were of a considerable age and had long periods of service on the estate, were put out of employment; and whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to compensate these men for their loss, either by the provision of alternative employment, or by any other means.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 17 and 18 together.

An 816 acre arable section of this estate was sold voluntarily to the Land Commission by the owner: possession of that section of the property passed to the Land Commission on 1st June last.

Arrangements are also being made for the purchase by the Forestry Division of some 4,000 acres of mountain land for afforestation purposes: the arrangements are well advanced but have not so far been finally concluded.

The position regarding any persons who may have been displaced from employment by reason of the purchase of the estate by my Department is at present under investigation.
