Vol. 199 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Assembly Industry.

16.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the percentage of workers now employed and the overall figure likely to be retained in the motor assembly industry as a result of the decision by the groups of motor assemblers, referred to by him, to stay in the industry.

I am not in a position to add to what I said in reply to a question on the motor assembly industry in Dáil Éireann on 23rd January.

Has the Minister no idea of the number of people likely to be retained? Is there any firm figure of the number of people likely to be retained as a result of the number of manufacturers who are likely to stay in the assembly business?

The Deputy knows that the Report of the Committee on Industrial Organisation gave certain indications of the numbers likely to be rendered redundant. I accepted the report of that committee and I have taken steps to encourage the assemblers to enter into new activities to avoid redundancy. The statement made by the assemblers that they would continue in production is a matter for them. They know their own business better than I do. I do not know how many would be involved in it.
