asked the Minister for Health the total number of persons certified as having died from lung cancer in each of the years 1950, 1960, 1961 and 1962.

asked the Minister for Health the total number of people certified as having died from coronary heart disease in each of the years 1950, 1960, 1961 and 1962.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 5 and 6 together.

The information requested by the Deputy was furnished in a statement which I circulated to Deputies and Senators and to the press on 29th ultimo. In view, however, of the public importance of the matter, I propose to give the figures again. They are as follows:—

The number of persons certified as having died from lung cancer in 1950 was 298; in 1960 was 648; in 1961 was 682; and in 1962 was 697.

The number of persons certified as having died from coronary heart diseases in 1950 was 2,906; in 1960 was 4,023; in 1961 was 4,285; and in 1962 was 4,539.
