Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Bus Stops.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that bus stops in the Dublin area are in several cases situated in close proximity to road junctions, making it necessary in some cases for buses to cross lines of traffic sharply in order to make a right-hand turn; if many stops are situated on bends or within thirty feet of a road junction; and, if so, if he will ensure that all such bus stops are reviewed by the Garda Síochána in the interest of greater road safety.

While the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, is the authority for deciding on the siting of bus stops, decisions are, in practice, taken only after detailed consultations between the Garda Síochána and CIE.

Owing to the number of buses in Dublin and the need to make reasonable provision for the convenience of bus-passengers, it is impossible to restrict bus stops to sites that are ideal, though none of them is within 30 feet of a road junction.

Any complaint received either by the Gardaí or by CIE about the location of a particular bus stop is promptly investigated but, as I have indicated, it is often necessary to accept particular sites as the best available even though they are open to criticism on one or more grounds.
