Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Decimal Coin Minting.

188.

asked the Minister for Finance by whom and at what cost the first of the new Irish decimal coins are being minted.

Both the existing Irish coins and the new decimal coins are minted at the Royal Mint in London.

The first decimal coins which have come into circulation are the 10 new penny and 5 new penny coins. There is no additional cost involved in the issue of these coins. They are being put into circulation, as required, to meet demands for florins and shillings, with which they are identical in value and size.

On average, at present rates it costs 2.88d to mint a 10 new penny coin and 1.56d to mint a 5 new penny coin.

Question No. 189 postponed.
