Vol. 241 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Service Vehicles.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will reexamine the position concerning the control of public service vehicles with special reference to taxi-hackney car owners under the order made by the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations; if he is aware that people seeking to hire a public service vehicle now find it difficut to do so; and that this could lead to abuse; and if he will make a statement on the matter in view of the general unrest among taxi-hackney car owners.

Earlier this year I set up an informal committee to assemble the facts relating to the operation of taxis and hackneys. When this committee reports to me I shall be in a better position to decide whether any amendments are necessary in the present legislation relating to public service vehicles. I am not aware, however, that, as the Deputy alleges, people seeking to hire public service vehicles now find it difficult to do so.
