Vol. 242 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Bridge Order.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the growing traffic congestion in and around Waterford city and, in accordance with the recommendation of the report on traffic in the city of Waterford undertaken by Messrs. McCarthy and Associates, he will make a bridge order to enable Waterford Corporation to proceed with the erection of a high level bridge upstream from Redmond bridge.

I have received an application from Waterford Corporation for a bridge order to provide for the construction of a second bridge across the River Suir at Waterford and in accordance with the statutory procedure set out in the Local Government Act, 1946, I have directed the local authority to prepare and submit a preliminary report in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that the approach roads are not capable of carrying the very heavy traffic they are at present carrying? Neither are the lifting spans of the existing bridge and it is possible that, unless quick action is taken by the Minister in granting a new bridge order there will be serious loss of life if something happens to the bridge.

The appropriate steps are being taken.
