Vol. 242 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lighting of Pedestrian Crossings.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that pedestrian crossings are not properly lit at night; and that they are in consequence a grave hazard to those using them; and if he will take steps to ensure that they are properly lit and identified.

The lighting and identification of pedestrian crossings is the responsibility of the local authority concerned. The subject has, however, been under examination by my Department in consultation with Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council. I have already indicated that adequate lighting of crossings can best be achieved by the provision of public lighting to traffic route standards. When the study to which I have referred is completed, I hope to be in a position to issue recommendations to the local authorities, with particular regard to locations where the traffic route standard of lighting is not practicable. In this connection, I should mention that the Dublin County Council in co-operation with the corporation have already initiated a programme for the improvement of public lighting on arterial routes to the city.

Will the Minister not agree that confusion exists at present due to the fact that the lighting of these crossings is very similar to that of sodium vapour lamps which are used in street lighting? Is he aware of this fact?

No, I do not think so.

That the pedestrian crossing lighting is confused with this sodium vapour lamps used for street lighting?

I do not think so.

The Minister must never have observed these things.
