Vol. 242 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Buchanan Report.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government what has been the result of the Government's consideration of the Buchanan Report.

The Government in their statement of 19th May, 1969, on the Buchanan Report indicated that because of the implications of the consultant's recommendations they would have to be considered further in the context of proposals for regional development generally. It was announced that regional groups of planning authorities and other public bodies would be set up to co-ordinate regional programmes and that regional units of the Industrial Development Authority would undertake regional industrial development in co-operation with the groups. The formation of the groups is being arranged and it is intended that they will report on conditions in their areas as regards problems and opportunities affecting prospects for development and make recommendations on investment priorities. When the regional reports have been completed and assessed, regional development measures will be further considered.

Can the Minister give any indication when all this information will be collected and sent to the Government?

I do not know how long it will take.

Has the Minister any idea whether it will be months or years or decades?

It will not be years.

Will it be in time for the next budget?

It might.
