Vol. 246 No. 10

Written Answers. - Electric Wiring Risks.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if having regard to the risk to life caused by confusion arising out of the change in the colour of positive, negative and earth leads in electricity wiring, he will request the ESB to print suitable warning notices on all accounts for electricity; if his Department and the ESB will mount a suitable advertising campaign to make the public aware of the changes and the risks involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

When the statutory order prescribing the new colour code was made last November publicity was given to the change. As the new code comes into operation on 1st July next arrangements had been made to publish further notices this month in the daily newspapers and in appropriate trade journals reminding the public of the change. The newspaper notices will appear this week.

I understand that the Electricity Supply Board have under consideration the issue to the public of a special leaflet showing the new colour code. They consider, however, that printing of a notice on electricity bills is not practicable.
