With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a list of the names of the 46 structural engineers who applied for inclusion in the panel as a result of Press advertisement.
Four main factors are taken into account in selecting engnineers for particular works. They are:
1. General suitability for the project: It is advantageous to appoint an engineer with particular experience of the kind of work involved.
2. Size of the project: In the case of a large or complicated job the Office of Public Works would need to be satisfied that the engineers had the staff, organisation and resources necessary to tackle it.
3. Location of job: There are obvious advantages in having an engineer whose office would be convenient to the job.
4. Fair allocation of work: It is the practice to spread commissions over as many consultants as possible.
