Vol. 251 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roxboro (Limerick) Locomotive Works.

11.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether there is any danger of redundancy at the CIE locomotive works at Roxboro, Limerick; and if he will outline what plans CIE have to ensure maximum utilisation of the buildings, plant and machinery in the future.

I have been informed by CIE that no redundancy in the CIE workshops at Limerick is foreseen in the immediate future and that the facilities there will continue to be used for the repair and maintenance of wagons.

Mr. O'Donnell

The Minister has used the words "the immediate future". Can we take it that the long-term outlook for the locomotive works at Roxoboro is reasonably good from the point of view of employment, et cetera?

No redundancy is foreseen anyway, and the wagon works will continue.

Mr. O'Donnell

Is the Minister aware that there were certain fears in recent weeks that things were not well, and that there were doubts about the flow of work in the next few months there?

The Minister has given a guarantee that there will be no redundancy.

There is no basis for those doubts.
