Vol. 251 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Housing List.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government when Dublin Corporation will be in a position to offer accommodation to families of three (husband, wife and one child) at present on the housing list.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government why Dublin Corporation will not include families of two (husband and wife) on their housing list.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 49 and 50 together.

In accordance with the approved scheme of letting priorities as adopted by Dublin Corporation on 18th May, 1968, families, irrespective of size, who are being displaced from dangerous buildings, or by statutory operations or from individual houses designated as unfit under the Housing Acts, or who are in need of accommodation on medical grounds or who are elderly persons or elderly couples, are offered accommodation by the corporation. On the corporation's recently revised waiting list, there are 222 such families of two persons approved for rehousing.

Families in need of rehousing because of overcrowding or on other grounds are generally listed in order of family size and are offered accommodation in the area of their choice in order of priority of housing need. Families of two are not normally entered on the waiting list at present other than those in the special categories to which I have already referred.

As regards the provision of housing accommodation for families of three persons, I understand from Dublin Corporation that it is not possible to say in advance when families of any particular size will be offered accommodation. A large number of families of three persons have been rehoused in recent years in Ballymun.
