Vol. 251 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oil Slicks.

72.

asked the Minister for Local Government what provisions have been made to combat oil slicks which may arise from spillages off the Irish coast; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The local authorities of the maritime counties and county boroughs are considering, at my request, the formulation of outline plans to deal with oil spillages in their areas. When these plans are available consideration will be given to the extent to which they may need to be supported from other sources.

Will the oil companies concerned pay any money to such a fund?

No decisions have been made as to the financing of it.

Is the Minister aware that such slicks have already shown up on parts of Kerry?

I am not aware of the slicks the Deputy is referring to, but there have been ones from time to time.
