Vol. 252 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fees of Part-time Court Stenographers.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange for the granting of a realistic increase in the fees paid by his Department to part-time court stenographers.

The State's responsibility for the recording of evidence given in court is confined to the Central Criminal Court, criminal trials in the Circuit Court and Chancery actions in the High Court. This work is normally done by permanent stenographers attached to my Department and casual stenographers are engaged to supplement the permanent staff as required. In all other instances arrangements for the recording of evidence are entirely a matter for the parties.

I have received no representations that the present rates for casual stenographers are inadequate. These rates correspond generally with those allowable for taxation purposes under the Rules of the Superior Courts.

When were the allowances fixed?

These particular people have received no increase since 1964 and would the Minister consider this a representation on their behalf now and examine the matter?

That seems a very reasonable request.

In the light of what Deputy Power has said, I will look into the situation.

No one getting £29 a day?
