Vol. 254 No. 3

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Arklow Harbour Improvements.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the up-to-date position regarding the application by Arklow Harbour Commissioners for a grant for improvements to the harbour.

I received a deputation from the Arklow Harbour Commissioners on 13th May, 1971, and explained to them that the major harbour improvement scheme proposed by them and estimated to cost £1.5 million was unrealistic in relation to traffic at the port and that an application for a State grant of that magnitude could not be considered. I also informed the commissioners that it was open to them to prepare a new scheme aimed at providing the depths and facilities required by users and at remedying the siltation problem, the cost to be kept to the minimum. Pending receipt and full examination of any such scheme, I am unable to say what decision is likely to be taken thereon.
