Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Contingent in Cyprus.

14.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether, in the light of recent events which have occurred in the Border area between Irish and British troops, he deems it unwise to keep a contingent of the Irish army in Cyprus.

The Defence Forces have participated with distinction in the United Nations peace-keeping operation in Cyprus since its inception in 1964. The question of continuing Irish participation is kept under constant review, in the light of all relevant considerations.

Does the Minister still maintain that with the use of the antique weapons and machines that they have in Cyprus, it is still right and just that these men should be sent out there to work under such conditions?

I think the United Nations welcome the presence of Irish troops in their forces there. Our policy is, of course, to contribute as much as we can to international peace and I am certain that our Army authorities regard the experience as very valuable for our Army.

What about machines? No answer.
