Vol. 265 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Bridge Repair.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that approaches on the north side of Redmond Bridge, Waterford City, are currently the subject of a major repair operation which is causing much inconvenience to traffic and to the operations of local firms; if he will expedite the progress towards the provision of a second bridge; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware, that Waterford Corporation, acting on the advice of their consultants, have found it necessary to take urgent measures to strengthen the structure referred to. These include the placing of bailey bridges as a temporary measure pending the completion of permanent repairs. Special steps have been taken in consultation with my Department to ensure that the works are completed quickly.

The corporation have also been advised that the over-water structure forming part of Terminus Street and connected with the approaches to Redmond Bridge also requires to be strengthened, and they have instructed their consultants to proceed urgently with the necessary designs for this work. Pending the carrying out of this work it will be necessary, subject to the approval of the Garda authorities, to introduce one-way traffic on Terminus Street for heavy vehicles.

The corporation's consultants are proceeding with the detailed investigation, including test borings, of the recommended site for the second bridge near Bilberry Quarry.

I appreciate and regret that the measures now being taken cause inconvenience and disturbance to all sections of the community in Waterford and surrounding areas. I am, however, sure that all will accept that inconvenience is unavoidable and is preferable to having to close the bridge to traffic. I am satisfied that all reasonable steps are being taken to expedite the works. The full cost of the works is being met from the Road Fund.
