Vol. 266 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birr Industrial Projects.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the IDA have any proposals for the provision of new industries in Birr, County Offaly.

Mr. R. Burke

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that, apart from one small industry application, there are no proposals on hands for new industrial projects in Birr, County Offaly, at present.

I can assure the Deputy, however, that every effort is being made to ensure that the job target of 250 for the town-grouping Banagher-Birr-Ferbane and Kilcormac will be achieved.

Is the Minister aware of a statement made by his predecessor in office on 10th February, 1972——

Is the Deputy entitled to quote?

The Chair does not wish to have any quotations at Question Time. It is not in order.

Fair enough. Is the Minister aware that his predecessor in office admitted there was a serious unemployment problem in Birr? He further admitted that the IDA had no factories in the pipeline. I wonder would the Minister consider this town now as a pilot area for the development of industry in the light of the admission of a serious unemployment problem in the town?

Mr. R. Burke

I understand the town of Birr is now one of the priority areas particularly since Portlaoise and Athlone have benefited to some considerable extent from employment possibilities. The Deputy's point of view will be taken into consideration.
