Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Building Services.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take steps to ensure that all services provided in public buildings will be maintained at the highest possible standard.

Mr. Kenny

I can assure the Deputy that the Office of Public Works continuously endeavour to ensure that State buildings are maintained to the highest possible standard. In the Estimates for Public Works and Buildings for the current year the amount provided under subhead F1—Maintenance, is £2,495,400 which is the highest ever provided under this subhead.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in the gentlemen's cloakroom in the National Gallery there are basins in poor condition, toilets with no locks on the doors and broken seats?

Mr. Kenny

I am not aware of that but if the Deputy gives me a list of these deficiencies I will have them rectified.

I will not go round as a "jacks" inspector for the Parliamentary Secretary's office.

Mr. Kenny

Judging by the number of questions the Deputy puts down, he must be going round somewhere to get the information on these things. He is leading the House by about 300.

That was last session.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if the regulations made prior to the change of Government enabling disabled persons to have easier access to public buildings have been successful; and if he proposes to introduce any amendments thereto.

Mr. Kenny

The code of instructions "Access for the Disabled to Buildings" issued by the Commissioners of Public Works in February, 1972 in relation to buildings under their control has been found generally satisfactory. The Commissioners propose to review the instructions next year with a view to making any modifications that may be desirable in the light of experience and developments in the interval.
