Vol. 272 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Peace Commissioners.

91.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of male and the number of female peace commissioners appointed by him since 1st April, 1973.

Five hundred and twenty-five men and 13 women were appointed peace commissioners since 1st April, 1973.

Would the Minister consider that there seems to be serious discrimination against the female sex in the allocation of the peace commissioner patronage which he has indulged in over the past 12 months?

The pattern of appointments in terms of sex follows precisely the pattern which I found when I came into office.

The pattern of patronage was not there.

Can the Minister state how many vacancies are still left to be filled?

No, I cannot.

Are there any?

From place to place there are.

Is it tens or hundreds?

I have no idea.

Gross discrimination against the female sex.

If the Deputy is aware of an area where there is a vacancy and has a suitable nomination I would be glad to consider it— man or woman.

We will try you with that one.
