Vol. 282 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Firm Operations.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will investigate the complaints about the operations of a nationwide building firm (name supplied) in view of the difficulty people have in getting work finished and grants paid as a result of this firm's work.

I have no power to undertake such an investigation. My Department's functions in relation to the payment of housing grants are to ensure that statutory requirements are complied with and that work is completed to the required standard.

No application for new house grants have been received from the building firm in question, but I understand that a small number of applications have been received from individuals whose houses have been, or are being, built by this firm. A few grants have been paid in respect of satisfactorily completed houses: grants are not paid until final inspections have confirmed that it is in order to do so.
