Vol. 285 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School.

36.

asked the Minister for Education why the work on the new extension at Saint Michael's Convent, Finglas, Dublin has been interrupted; when it is likely to recommence; and when it will be satisfactorily completed.

The interruption of work on the new extension at St. Michael's Secondary School, Finglas, Dublin, was caused by the withdrawal of the original contractor. I understand that a new contractor has been engaged and was on site on November 3rd.

The Minister has not answered the third part of the question: when will the work be completed?

It will take about 15 months to complete the work.

Can the Minister say whether there will be accommodation in Finglas for all those looking for secondary level education there next September?

The question of whether there will be enough accommodation in Finglas is one I cannot answer readily but September next will fall within the 15 months which are necessary to complete this project. I should imagine that if the area so requires we shall have to provide accommodation for the pupils there but I cannot say that this accommodation will be in Finglas particularly.

I do not have to remind the Minister of the unsatisfactory state of the existing school but I am asking him to make a special case in so far as this extension is concerned.

I give that undertaking.
