Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Schools Discipline.

4.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement about the state of discipline in Dublin vocational schools.

The question of discipline in vocational schools is primarily a matter for the vocational education committees. However a problem has arisen in connection with disruptive children in vocational schools in the Dublin city area and I have recently established a working party, comprised of representatives of my Department and the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, to examine the problem and to make recommendations to me in the matter.

Would the Minister agree that the provision of remedial teachers, even at the higher than average rate, would be a help in this regard, and would he see to it that courses are made available for remedial teachers?

I agree that more remedial teachers would help in the educational problems of the city area generally, but the problem raised in this question is one that has to be approached in a particular manner. I have given specific terms of reference to the committee examining the problem and I will let the House know as soon as possible the result of our deliberation.
