The number of staff employed fluctuates during the year because of the incidence of the employment of casual and temporary staff taken on for short periods. A census of staff employed in the Department is taken on 1st January each year. The number employed at that date in each of the years 1973, 1974 and 1975 was 20, 105, 21,697 and 22,927 respectively. The figures exclude postmasters at sub-post offices and others engaged on a contract basis.
