Vol. 303 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Cork Burial Grant.

274.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange to have a burial grant paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The person referred to by the Deputy did not claim a death grant under the social insurance scheme in respect of her deceased husband. However, even if a claim had been made, the grant would not have been payable as his insurance would not satisfy the contribution conditions. The scheme for the payment of death grants was introduced from 1 October 1970 and only contributions paid after that date count for death grant purposes. The deceased was over pensionable age on 1 October 1970 and, accordingly, employment contributions could not have been paid on his behalf after that date.

It is understood that the widow in question made an application to the Southern Health Board for a payment under the supplementary welfare allowances scheme towards the funeral costs incurred but her application was refused.
