Vol. 305 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Disability Benefit Application.

488.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange to have disability benefit paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The person referred to by the Deputy is not entitled to disability benefit as he does not have sufficient insurance contributions to qualify for payment of that benefit.

A claim for injury benefit under the Occupational Injuries Acts was, however, received from him in January last in respect of an injury to his knee which he alleged was received in an accident at his work rendering him incapable of work from 10 December 1977. As his employer was at that time unable to confirm that an accident had occurred, further inquiries were necessary in the matter. These inquiries have now been completed and injury benefit has been awarded to him for the period of incapacity for work as a result of his injury, viz., 10 December 1977 to 18 February 1978. Medical certificates received after the latter date show a cause of incapacity which is not attributable to the injury and injury benefit is not payable in respect of that incapacity. The last medical certificate received from the claimant is dated 6 March 1978.

Pending completion of inquiries regarding his entitlement to injury benefit, the claimant was paid supplementary welfare allowance which is recoupable from the amount of injury benefit now awarded. A cheque for the balance has been issued to the claimant.
