asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that, by the actions of the National Council of Education Awards, recognition of Irish qualifications for membership and fellowship of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences has been withdrawn by that institute; and the action he proposes to take to reestablish the position pertaining before the withdrawal of recognition by the UK institute; and if he is aware that membership and fellowship of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences are included in the required conditions laid down by his Department for those aspiring to promotional grades of technologist and chief technologist in the Health Services.

I understand that the National Council for Educational Awards are in consultation with the institute regarding the recognition of Irish qualifications by the institute. It is desirable that mutual recognition of qualifications for medical laboratory technicians as between this country and the United Kingdom should continue as heretofore and I look forward to a satisfactory outcome to these consultations.
