Vol. 311 No. 3

Written Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

153.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of persons under 25 years unemployed at the latest date for which figures are available.

The most recent source of information on unemployed persons classified according to age groups is the 1977 labour force survey. The results from this survey show that there was an estimated 42,200 unemployed persons under 25 years at the end of April of that year, of which 14,500 were seeking regular work for the first time.

It should be borne in mind, however, that there are conceptual differences between the 1975 and 1977 labour force surveys with regard to the measurement of unemployment which prevent valid comparisons being made between the results from the two surveys.

154.

asked the Taoiseach the total number unemployed at Edenderry, Tullamore, Birr, Portarlington, Portlaoise and Rathdowney labour exchanges on 31 January 1978 and on 31 January 1979.

The following table sets out the latest available information on the number of persons on the live register at Edenderry, Tullamore, Birr, Portarlington, Portlaoise and Rathdowney local offices for January 1979 and at the corresponding date in 1978.
